Speak of convenience - can't agree more. I carry two keys with me.

My door key can fit boot and driver's door but not ignition and passenger door.

My ignition key can fit only the ignition key.

My passenger door? No key can fit.

Perhaps your key barrel is starting to give way...anyway it's not that expensive to replace it...

Here is good post for your reference from our Great hoggies...

Ideally, this is what the procedure should be, simple

unfortunately in my case it wasn't simple, whoever change the lock barrel previously for this car had jammed one of the rear locking spring/clips. When the releasing rods were inserted into the release holes the lock barrel refused to pop out.

So the entire ignition lock assembly had to be removed, including the steering wheel, lower dash cover, the dash fitting around the steering, the instrument cluster.

The barrel casing had to be slowly eased out by prying and hammering the gap with a chissel. Eventually after much effort the barrel casing came out.

There are 2 options of lock barrel to replace.
1. The original design barrel, which is predominantly made from an aluminium alloy which is quite soft and not very durable.

2. A compatible barrel with a short key with circular indentations, The barrel construction is all steel and the key has less sharp edges.

My old and new keys

I decided to go with option 2 as it was strongly recommended by the locksmith and it is the same type of lock on my previous E220 which always felt smoother.

As part of this whole exercise I decided to repair the lock tumblers for my passenger door and boot as they were starting to show signs of stubborness. The locksmith is able to replace the tumbler pins/gates that are worn so the the lock is as good as new.

From this experience this is what I learnt.
1. As soon as the locks show any sign of jamming, replace immediately as you could be stuck in the middle of nowhere when it really jams on you.

2. Make sure the locksmith/mechanic that you get to repair the jammed lock has experience specifically with the W124. The techniques and knowledge specifically for this lock is very unique. Don't send it to a regular mechanic that will use brute force through trial and error. They may destroy many things in the process. e.g. the ignition lock, steering lock, the whole bundle of wiring interlocks behind the ignition switch, the dashboard etc.

3. The ignition lock for the W124 is one of the most difficult to crack. Unlike other cars, if you lose your W124 keys or if your keys gets completely jammed. The whole ignition lock has to be removed and alot of effort will be required to drill through the harden steel barrel casing to release locking pins.

That black round cover around the key is solid hardened steel!

hi..
i thought it will be better to have different keys for the ignition, door and boot..more secured rather than one key for all..conventional security.. and coupled up with conventional steering lock or advance security alarm system..Any contradicting view?
