Re: Top O/H for Mandy ![]() Forget to update this thread on my adventures with Mabelline...it took me while to search back this thread...hehehe... ![]() Final corrective measure is the Vacuum Hoses. It was missing...the mechanic installed it back. The car is now back to it's normal fuel consumption. Now it is giving me between 9-11 km/l depending whether it is highway, mixed highway and town driving...just like it used to... Thanks for all the feedbacks guys.. ![]()

To my W201 Gang, here is the latest updates as reported to me by my son. The fuel consumption now has improved between 8.5 to 9.5 km/l. I will most likely try to set the CO to 0.1 in the next services. Otherwise, the car is running well... much better than before I did the top OH... ![]()

Zan, I think I know why I have difficulty to zoom into the problem.... ![]() The main reason is that she's jumping too much after I did that Top OH on her...

Re: Top O/H for Mandy ![]() Here is the latest recap and update on my pursuit to quench Mandy's thirst... 1. Did a Top OH. Change the following components: Vacuum valve Labor Top O/H To grind all valve Top set Valve seal Valve cover gasket Oil filter Spark plug Mobil 1 15/40W Servicing the distributor Fuel taken from high volume station i.e. my cousin brand.. I notice my fuel consumption is very high i.e. 6.4km/l. Before Top OH I usually get about 10-11 km/l. 2. Send the car back for 1st CO adjustment. Check injectors, fuel/petrol supply hoses/pipes and also the fuel pump and filter under the car. Change fuel pipes. Fuel consumption improves to 9.2 km/l. 3. Send the car back again for 2nd CO adjustment. Fuel consumption when back to around 6km/l. 4. Send the car back again for 3rd CO adjustment. Fuel consumption improves to 7.68km/l after the mechanic services the distributor. 5. Send back the car for the 4th CO adjustment. This time the mechanic set the CO level to 0.2 from the previous level of 0.3. The Fuel consumption now improves on average between 8-9 km/l mixed highway/city. This time my chief mechanic is handling the car personally. The following has been checked for the last two days.. 1. Air temperature sensor is OK 2. Check switch to adjust for RON 95- No such switch exist in my car. 3. Braking systems is OK. 4. No issues on the spark plugs as it have been change. 5. Double check fuel/petrol supply hoses/pipes and also the fuel pump and filter under the car to ensure there is no fuel leak. Everything is OK. Addition works done by the mechanic is calibrating the CO using a digital CO Tester...Gas Analyser meter. He noticed that the CO level is higher than the manually set 0.2. Hence, using this digital tool he set the CO at 0.2. In addition, he also changed the breather hosts When I send the car was in full tank and I asked him to drive and really test the car. Obviously he kept his promised. Hence on my way back today, I top up Mandy to full tank. ![]() So will monitor in the next refill

Thanks a million zan.... Today, I had another refill after travelling 168 miles...fuel tank is slightly less than half... I'm happy that I can get 9.3 km/l on mixed town/highway... Really appreciate your sharing here with me. I will keep this close to my heart on the next things I will check when I send the car to the workshop. Hence, next one on my hit list is the temperature sensor... ![]()

Re: Top O/H for Mandy The air temperature sensor will reduce fuel when the air is hot & less denser and increase fuel when the air is cold and more denser. The inability of the ECU to moderate the fuel according to the temperature of air may result in poorer FC as the ECU will run on the richer preset values. The other thing you can look at is the cold start valve. Maybe it's stuck in the cold position longer than required? In any event 8-9km/l is not too bad. Let us know if you found out the bug that eats fuel in your baby :)

Thanks for sharing your thought and tips Zan... After adjusting the FD, the consumption is still within 8.5 km/l. Have refilled another full tank over the weekend and will let it run again for a 2nd measurement.. I'm just curious on your suggestion to change the air temp sensor. May I know what has this got to do with high FC? Current engine temperature is 80-85 C... As you said, I'm just beginning to accept the fact that my car will be running between 8-9km/l. Obviously there is a gap before the top OH which I can get on average of 10km/l with RON 95. My mechanic seems to be tackling the CO and the FD in addition to the other components that has been replaced as I stated in my earlier posts.... Other than high FC, the car is behaving really well... I will ask the mechanic to check the other points you stated when I send the car for the next servicing... Till than any other suggestions are welcome.... Thanks for bumping this thread... ![]()

Re: Top O/H for Mandy When you top overhaul the mech will remove the carbon deposits so the car will have a lower compression ratio. A high compression ratio(within limits) will increase performance & give better FC (think of diesels). But the FC gap what you experience is too wide apart. That being said, 190e should give around 8-9km in mixed driving. Have you tried to change the air temp sensor? It's attached to the air filter housing...cost around SG$15.
I have heard that these cars will run even w/o ecu in fail safe mode ( apparently the performance is even better at the cost of FC) as these fuel injection systems are CSI in nature as oppose to electronic & only rely on the ECU to make changes for variation in temperatures. They can't even cater to different fuel types automatically. There is switch to adjust that. So if you are using 95 or lower you will need to adjust for that. The other thing is that you may have binding brakes or low tires pressures which affects FC a lot!

Waalaikumsalam Manta, The adjustment (CO and air mixture) was only made yesterday as my son was using the car. So will need to monitor after this on the progress. Insha Allah, will update in the next fuel fill... ![]()
