Temp rising on E230 W210
Hello again benz bros & sis

Yesterday I went to melaka doing some raya shopping. Its quite busy during this festive season...parking have to tawaf many many rounds and suddenly I realized that my temp reads above 90...around 95 degrees. This never happened before at any worst traffic jams I have been through. I remembered that this issue have been discussed before in this forum by some members but I can't find it..so sorry to bring out the issue again. In my mind I am suspecting a fault by the thermostat..but on the other hand I don't really know whether or not e230 w210 has the same cooling system as it's older bro the 124 series. But if any of our bros out there have experience or have the knowledge related to this issue..please share with me. another question is..if its still using the older bro's cooling system, whats the temperature rating for the thermostat?, how much does it cost..susah hati dah dekat nak balik kampung.

Hi,

Based on my personal experience in W210/E280, the cooling system should be same or similar compare to W124, normal temp should be around 80, and once it is near to 95/100, then which mean something wrong. The possibilities are: 1) Thermostat, 2) Cooling Fan (or related acces.), 3) Water Pump.
So send in to your mechanic for a check, could be one of them. Good Luck.

hello JCEEE

the 90-95C temps u experienced is normal, based on my own experience...kl driving with all the jams sure make you worry about overheating all the time...and at that temp range, very normal....i would worry only if it exceeded 100C.

make a point to check yr water level routinely...any "abnormal" water loss should be investigated....UK cars came with 87C thermostat rating, local spec came with 71C rating...

cheers

Mine is consistently running at 90-95C, hot or cold weather.
Hardly see the meter at 80C.

Bro Jceee, I had same experience with my 124. Last year I went to KT during Merdeka day. While queing to the Pasang Payang the temperature reached 100c and the inside of the cas felt like oven. Came bck an went went to see Alex@Benzwong. He suggested to change to new double speed fan which the 2nd speed kicked in at 85c. Until then my 124 hasn't exceed 85 even in the traffic jam (almost everyday - you know how Federal highway like during peak hour). So jceee beside checking what other members sugested you can also ask your mechanic to check whether the fan kick at 85 or 100. If it kicked at 100, try to adjust it to 85.

Change the thermostat, it's a fairly simple and inexpensive ($30 - $80 depending on type of thermostat) maintenance item.

local spec thermostats open at 70+C vs 80+C for original spec thermostat, further more thermostat become 'lazy' with age. i.e. they don't open fully at the rated temperature.

Other things you should look at are the fans and flushing out the radiator.

Guys..Thanks a very lot..all the suggestions and exps are a great comfort to me. For ur info..my double fan kicks up at approx 80+ and so far no sign of corrosion in the tank.I will probably change the thermostat...my e230 is local...so I'll go for the 75C..I'm quite positive that it become 'lazy' after those 11yrs of operation.thanks again guys.

Re: Temp rising on E230 W210
Hi guys,

This morning I bought a thermostat..71C..cost me RM90.00 and I pasang it right away and of 'cos with new coolant. This afternoon I found out that my temp still not up to my satisfaction. Soit came to my mind the feeling of curiousity towards the twin air con fan. After observing it at some diff temp I found that it turn at a regularly interval and when I tried turning it with my hand..feel like its jammed. Got to Batu Pahat Specialist and he confirmed..rosak 'cos good fan is easy and light when u turn it with ur hand. So pasang new fan cost RM650.00..confirm ringan and its turning like it was before. Really amazing what money can do to you car..he.he. Hope this case dah selesai..to be frank, I tak sempat test dengan betul2 lagi but Iam quite confident because found one of the main cause of rising temp.Cuti hari ni because of this prob.
