Engine heats up when idle for more than 15 minutes
Guys,

I have changed most of the parts at Ah Sang a few months back, but problem still persists. New radiator fans, radiator flush, changed the termostat (a weird looking metal part) - Ah Sang says its usually the culprit for overheating. He also topped up the oil for the engine fan so it spins faster. Radiator was changed 5 years back (Original BEHR).

Still overheats when I am stuck in traffic (stop and go). But once I start driving, it will drop significantly. Also, on highways, temperature is always below 80.

Any other culprit to this problem?

Thanks! Happy CNY to all the folks celebrating it.

Dude,

If your thermostat is the correct one and yer fan's running at the correct speed......

Check your radiator again.

1. Bleed the radiator to eradicate any 'air-locks'.

2. IF you have ever experienced overheating before, the ensuing sludge may just clog up your radiator. Therefore, regardless of you changing the aforementioned parts to cure your OH problems, your 5 year old rad may be clogged and compromised your cooling route.

3. If No.2's the culprit...Just get the rad re-cored. Fill and bleed and yer good to go.

4. Get the mechanic to check your waterpump as well.

Good luck,

oops. i blv this is must be the magnetic clutch fan.

i've done much in killing the temp issue on my car - same like yours (flush, thermostat for 80degree, even installing the electric fan). none solved the issue until i did a top overhaul, replacing the worn gasket, replacing the rusted water jacket, cleaning the rusty waterways in the engine block. then i install a brand new magnetic clutch fan. its been great since that.

i hope it trigger the clutch fan at the correct degree i.e 80degree. its said the 80degree match our tropical weather.

Hi guys,

I've checked the radiator. No air-blocks =)

Btw, I am hoping that it is not a top overhaul issue =( would cost a lot of $$$. A top overhaul was done a few years back on the engine as well. Is the magnetic clutch fan the two small fans in the front of the radiator? 260E has 2 fans, other models with lower cc's have 1 big fan.

Those fans were changed before. But I suspect its not spinning fast enough.. could this be the cause?

If you have changed that, please check the fuse and the fan switch.

Hi Mabel,

The fans are spinning, so I doubt its the fuse. What switch is this though? Would appreciate if you could elaborate a little.

Thanks!

If the fan is spinning than the fuse is OK.

If your fan switch is OK, the moment you hit 90C or 100C it will spin very fast. If it just spin but spinning "longlai"...check your fan switch. It should cost you not more than RM 100 to replace this switch,

bro ,

to check the fans are all in good working condition sng je.

when the overheating occurs, just stop your car at road side,
or better still do it at home with the engine running n
when the temp. shoots-up, check all your fans whether they
are spinning at full blast or not.you can feel it by
putting your hands in the engine bay just behind the fans.
it should feel strong n hot.if not its your fans problem.
if they are blowing full blast, then it`s some other issue.

by the way the fan behind the rad should be sucking air tru
the rad, n the 2 fans infront the rad should be blowing air
into the rad.

hope this helps.

i believe your problem is related to the cooling fans/water
pump. this is bcoz from your explanation, it occurs when
your engine is running but your car is stationary hence
not enough cool air passing tru the rad.
or at idling your water pump is not pumping enough to circulate
the coolant due to the low engine speed at idling.

or it may be something else....

there are :
1. engine fan, attached to the engine, this one will trigger when the thermostat ask to. this is the magnetic clutch fan.

2. the 2/1 front fan - this one meant for your air-cond system.
