Salam and hello benzers!

Mal’s thread on Mabel, the Cat inspires me to write this thread. This time it’s about Mabel, the Car – my newly acquired 1997 Mercedes-Benz S-Class S320L.

http://www.mybenz.org/zoopp/html/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=9573&forum=26

As promised in the s320l thread, here is my review for this car. I've only owned this car for about two weeks, so this thread will be updated as I progress. I hope this thread would compliments the existing thread that is available in the W140 page thread and hopefully inspires more member to join the bandwagon in times to come.

I did some research on few Super Models before this purchased. The choices were simply between my preferences of S and E Class; Mercedes W140 S320L, S280, BMW 728i, Volvo S90, 960, W210 E280, BMW 528i and my home minister’s preferences for the newer W211 models. After viewing more than 25 cars, I finally decided to take this car. This will be my 18th vehicles acquisitions, my 4th Mercedes I owned, and my first S-Class, and perhaps it's one of the greatest cars... ever!

Here is Mabel's Specification..

My 1st ride on this car was actually in 1995 when I was chauffeured in France from Nice Airport to Cannes. I was impressed with the level of comfort, elegance and prestige of the car. My 2nd engagement with this car was in March 2009 when I was overtaken on the LPT highway when we were heading back to Trengganu to attend my auntie’s funeral. That few intense moments with this beast bring back those fond 1995 memories into perspective. My 3rd engagements has landed me with this car.

For a car that is 13 years old, the interiors still looked “untouched” and it still smelt like new. Evidence of high quality workmanship and materials is everywhere. All seats are comfortable and can be adjusted at the tip of your finger. The car is in immaculate condition and it belongs to one owner. Drives and looks like new. The quality of the interior materials is second to none; even the newer S series look cheap by contrast. There is plenty of room on the inside and the body has classic lines and the interior is classy. The double pane windows do a great job of keeping the cabin quiet. Turn the radio off and you cannot hear a whole lot inside the car even at 160km/h. This is truly an upscale car. It is the quietest car I have ever driven, and the double glazed glass makes for perfect climate control. The attention to detail is beyond compare with other brands. It is simple superb, the standard by which all others should be judged. The sound system is brilliant, and the seats are the most comfortable seats I have ever have to spent during those five hours journey back to East Coast. Even my fragile home minister feel at ease after that long trip and I still have some energy left for around of golf with my hometown friends after reaching my destination.

Having driven smaller and quicker cars in the past, driving this "tank" has been a new experience. The sheer size of this long wheel based version was overpowering to other road users. It takes a whole different style of driving to really appreciate its ride and handling. Slow and unhurried comes to mind but put pedal to metal and it just takes off easily and with great acceleration. The ride is the smoothest of any car I have driven, and the handling is unsurpassed for a car of this size and weight. On paper the 3.2 L M104 I6 engine does not look impressive with 228hp considering the weight of the car, but it moves this big car very well. The way the car responds to the driver it is as almost as you are at one with the car and it sticks to the road like glue even on the tightest corners. The car is an absolute pleasure to drive and while it can be a bit awkward to drive and park around town because of its sheer size, the parktronic feature makes up for it. It is a dream to drive on the open road and it feels downright fast on the highway cruising at 120km/h @2500rpm with the 5-speed 5G-TRONIC automatic. It seems to give better power at 3500 rpm and above.

The sunroof/moonroof is definitely a plus. Friends and relatives that has the pleasure to be in this car find it cool. My Mable the cat simply love it…Yeha…

Fuel consumption is on average 5-6km/l in the city, 7km/l in mix highway and cities and 9km/l on Highway, which considering the car weighs in at over 2200kg is what you have to expect. The engine requires 8 liters of synthetic oil and of course she drinks RON 95 which is RM 1.85 a liter so a full tank of fuel sets you back around the RM 185. At times when the car is at idle and if you listen closely you can almost hear the sound of ringgit coins falling out of your exhaust.

You can expect maintenance and running costs of this car to be about 20-30% higher than the E-Class. However, given the availability of 2nd hand part, maintenance should be manageable. Just to give you a flavor, before heading for the Eid Adha holidays, my air condition blower started to gives way. It’s not blowing strong enough. For ease of mind during the trip, I decided to replace it with a 2nd hand unit at a cost of RM 500. Brand new price is about RM 1800. Tires prices are around RM 320-1000 each depending on brands for the 16 “tires.

Before I bought it, I was warned that if I couldn't afford to buy it when it was new I shouldn’t be dreaming of maintaining it even when buying a 2nd hand unit. I responded by starting a research here in this community.

http://www.mybenz.org/zoopp/html/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=6339&forum=23&viewmode=flat&order=ASC&start=10

During my one year search, I come to realize that this car is priced between RM 485,000 to RM 855,000 brand new depending on specification during a time when our exchange rate is pretty strong at RM 2.5 to 1 USD. Based on the current prevailing prices, this car is definitely a STEAL.

In my humble opinion, to me this car has a very distinguished look, unlike the newer S class sedans, which have very little distinction from other luxury car manufacturers. This car is definitely a dream come true. Insha Allah, God’s willing, I'll do another review in six months to see if it is still worth it.

Summing up:

Would you recommend this car to your friend? YES

What things have gone wrong with the car?

As part of the Sales agreement, I put a condition to the dealer to bring the car to my mechanic for inspection prior to paying the down payment. We found there were few items that need to be fixed by the dealers before we conclude the final price. Before accepting the car, the dealers change the engine oil and filter, plush the radiator and fixed the agreed items except for these two:

• Pioneer CD changer not working. The dealer wanted to replace it with another banded HU. I declined since I was already happy with the existing Pioneer sound system. Hence the dealer sends the changer to their agent for repair.
• Fuel Meter indicator is jumping between ¾ tank to full tank when the tank is full. Any idea what is the problem here? Is it meter or sensor or float?

I will need to find time to bring the car back to the dealer to rectify the above issues. Current works in progress that need to be fixed are as follows:

1. Need to change the casing for the remote control. Contacted Stevan. He requested to post the remote control to Penang. His price is reasonable.
2. The alarm, immobilizer and central locking are working. The central locking at driver side is sometimes not OK. Any suggestion what is the issues here?
3. I plan to change the current front Pirelli tires (50% used) next month. Rear tires are still 70%.
4. Rear Parktronic and some of the Vacuum pump have started to give way. Will need find a solution in due time as it’s not an urgent issues right now.
5.Passenger side Headlamp wiper cover is missing. Have requested Kelvin to order the parts for me.

hi Mable,

again congratulation on your new ride. and I'm sure you'll gonna like the M104 engine.

-the fuel meter jumping, it could be the sensor or connector, it also happen with my car but still haven't change it yet

2. providing all the vacuum hoses are ok, maybe it's the door lock actuator. i think potong parts should be sufice.

do update this thread, I really interested to know more on what are the actual causes for the fuel meter erratic jumps.

Hi Mabel,

The cat seems happy on the sunroof. Thanks for the sharing. As for the fuel gauge issue, I guess most likely is the fuel float.

Mabel

Gongrats, nice, can we have some pctures.......makes me wanna go grab the XXX5001 too.
About the aircond blower, it is situated outside below the wipers, it is the same blower as the W116 and the W126. The locations of these blowers are different in each car but it is the same blower
As for the fuel gayge , it could be the sensor or sometimes bad grounding.

Wooooshing around in style huh and looks like you gonna make an entrance everywhere you go , better arrive late.

Will update it when I send my car for my next services. As you say, it's not an urgent issues. The dealer actually want to keep the car for another two days to trace the issues, but I need the car since I'm travelling back to East Coast..

Hence, I have two alternative choices; either to bring back to the dealer's workshop or to bring the car to my mechanic. Will update it here once I rectified the issues.

No 2, is not an urgent thing, the rear parktronic is intermittent, front is OK. The vacuum door, plan to solve it later as I can close the door nicely. It could be the solution as you mentioned or servicing those vacuum hose.

My pleasure brother !

On your 2nd point, I learn something useful from your masterpiece's thread. Hence I would not like to start another "war' here in this thread as I have a lot of respect to our W140 Gang here who is kind enough to share their experience with me when I started my research.

I believe every car is unique and as long as every one of us love what we have, that is all that matters.

The reason why I started this thread is to share my experience to those that are still thinking of getting one...I know ...based on the no of pm I received lately...
