DIY: Bosch Electronic Throttle Body Servicing and Cleaning
Throttle body is very durable, robust and unlikely to go wrong, but neglect can cost time, money or stranded on the road.

Servicing the Bosch electronic throttle body is not just cleaning the inlet, outlet and the butterfly plate. Most problem was due to the dirty carbon contact tracks inside the unit, which gives the symptoms of hesitation, surging, unstable idle especially in the early morning. Dirty carbon contact can cause throttle butterfly to hunt for position at idle. For owners with car fitted with Bosch electronic throttle body (drive by wire), may encounter clunking, clonking, clicking noise coming from engine bay when you left the ignition key at position 2 (on) for few minutes, but did not start the engine. That was due to the throttle motor hunting for idle position but couldn't find the right setting. When the engine was bring to live, the idle was erratic, unstable for a minute or two then went away, black carbon plus water was thrown out from the exhaust, car surge or hesitating on driving. This DIY tip is to eliminate all those irritating carbon contact problems.

*** This procedure apply to W203 throttle body and can be applied to any Mercedes "drive by wire" electronic throttle body.

Detach the air intake hose from air filter box by pressing down the two tabs. This will make the removal of the throttle body much easier.Loosen and remove all 4 torx screws around the throttle body and pull out. Detach the electrical connection by pressing lever clips on both side of socket.

Give the whole thing a few burst of contact cleaner spray and Wipe clean with rug/towel inside and out. Inspect the unit, the black plastic cover is secure to the body by 6 steel clips. To service the unit, the cover must be remove.

Now open it up with a pointed knife/thin blade screwdriver by lifting in the side of each steel clip. Lever from the metal side and not from the plastic side to minimise damage to the plastic cover. Remove all 6 clips.

Pry open the black plastic cover with back of knife, and pull out to unhook the internal electrical connections. On the inside of the plastic cover contains 3 carbon contact tracks that metal brushes on the throttle gear follow to relay the throttle position to the car's ECU.

Use some contact cleaner spray (WD40, CRC, Philip, etc), spray on the carbon contact tracks, wipe them clean with facial cotton/cotton buds/tissue papers then spray again, wipe until no more black dirt (loose carbon) on the cotton/tissue paper.

Give a few burst of spray on METAL BRUSHES on the nylon gear, but be careful, DO NOT touch with hard object, wipe or bend them, they are fragile.

These brushes control the rotational of the motor so the throttle butterfly can close or open according to applied voltage from accelerator pedal.

Lastly a few burst of spray to the copper contacts on the plastic cover and throttle motor. Let the excess liquid drop off. One of the nylon gear wheel might fall off during cleaning, don't worry, just reattach it back to the original position.

Before reassembly, inspect the rubber ring/seal for damage, replace or repair with silicone if necessary. Ensure that the rubber seal is properly sit in its slot. Reattach the black plastic cover back to the throttle body and put back the 6 steel clips. Put the clip onto the black plastic side and push the steel clip on the metal side.

Reattach the throttle body to intake manifold with 4 screws, DO NOT over tighten, then reconnect the electrical socket. Slot in the red rubber ring/adapter to the throttle neck and reattach the L-shape black plastic pipe and tighten the steel ring clip around it.
