w208 in the houz
hi all,
after reading the detailed write-ups of renngrun, mabel and Dr Gan - i think an introduction may do more good than harm ^^

and yes, i really like iskandar's intro on his E320

being a geek in the finance world, engineering does not exactly come easy. but as all my buddies agree, one way or another, we will end up with the benz

decided to skip the bmw phase and almost got hold of a 2.5M alfa156, then the bride to be ran away with another hunk

liked the 300SL at first, but the few samples I came across and spare parts pricing search drew me away

so a w208 it was, 10 years newer - and my neighbour with a red CLK32 in pristine condition parked at the basement of our apartment was a major encouragement

the w208 came with 71k kms and built in 1999 imported new said the importer, but the AP says 1997 used. car was brought in by a MB PI in PJ... sourced from UK

I looked quite a bit in the net to match the VIN but all VIN readers so far seem to suggest that the code has an error

VIN: WDB2084472T041059

a few things i figures out was autobox is a 722.605 <-- luckier than Iskandar :) and that it was made in germany, engine number is 111.975 model in production since 1997. could not tell the year of manufacture from the VIN

any help?

the first service done in Melawati (my regular workshop) required front shocks replacement and rear ball joints replacement, left door stopper replacement, all fluids changes, plugs and filters replaced. first bill was slightly less than 3k and the new tyres were slightly more than that

after 3 days in the workshop, it went on a run to singapore without any issues. except for the rain in the first night, damn.... the soft top somehow allowed water inside and the nappa leathers (came with the car) were soaking especially the seats

having read the blog by Other Roads and some thoughts about the gearbox, i braved myself to request for an external cooling box for the car. mod took one full day and the fluid pipes were cut and channeled to a "radiator" like box with heaps of fins 'made in korea' from some chop shop

objectives were mainly to extend the life of the gearbox, although I am still not convinved it is the best thing to do. rationale was:

1. sharing cooling mechanism with the engine is no good especially if there is a leak and either fuilds make way into the engine or the gearbox, which would be a major $$ disaster
2. cooler than 80+ degrees and more fins means longer life line for the ATF fluid and smoother shifts?

on the first day after the mod, yesterday.... the shift was initially bad and the car could not accelerate at some point and had to be restarted.... umm, foreman said to observe another few days and if need be, a reset could be done *my fingers remain crossed

nothing much else in the pipeline... just waiting for the fabric cleaning and sealing kit from Autoglym to fix the water proofing issue.

the ride comes with lovely Kleeman kits and 18" brabus replicas... 8months old nappa leather interior (I suspect now that it could be due to damages caused by rainwater flooding iside)

wisdom please

and thanks for mabel for help on key duplication pm earlier (still no response from C&C btw) - hope the VIN has not been tampered

Congratulation jason for securing one of these exotic car !

Thanks for another excellent introduction !

With regards to the VIN, you may try another website. Detail are enclosed in the links below, compliments from ismaia and friends..

On your 2nd point with regards to the external cooler for the GB, I agreed with your points. I have done it for my Perdana V6 in order to increase the life span of the gear box. So far it has been great and glad that I did it..

If you have the possibilities, would be nice if you can load some pics...pretty sure many have the same aspiration to own one of this beauty..

Keep us posted !

You have arrived ! ..

hi mabel,
thx ^^
the russian website rocks....

only 1 line gave me a little surprise, it said:

"984 COC DOC., DELETION OF VEHICLE REGISTRATION DOC."

wonder what that means and did the parallel importer requested for deletion so that the malaysian authorities would not know the actual year if manufacture

good to know my vin actually means something

the 2nd website, like all others don't seem to recognise my 17 characters and returned with error readings

the gearbox mod done, RM450... everything seems to work fine, so far *fingers crossed

soft-top specialist in selayang wanted 6k to replace the rubber seals in the 6 covvertible hydraulic arms *ouch - no i won't spend that much, will look for alternatives

Noted on the VIN site. Right now it seems to be the alternative we have unless someone cone with a new one. I agreed it kinda of handicap for not having access to the russian sites.

I was actually running some check on some W140, however this particular site does not provide the year it is produced. I was checking at quite a number of site and most of them points to Russian site..and of course as we know that site is down...

Hopefully we get some alternative soon...

The price for the ATF Cooler is about the same price I used for my Perdana. Mine is Toyota ATF Cooler.

Noted on the soft top, hopefully the CLK gang like Benzai, Conman or even ameer can help you on this one..

Congrats Jason and lucky you not to get the bloody Chi Er Er tian Wu gearbox
( TBH, the 722.5 GB is a stop-gap measure before they get onto the .6 versh which was still in the backburner then. What was perplexing was that the .5 was already in use for the W124 300-24 and subsequent E320 as an option. They actually knew the weakness but they still carried on...)

Anyways, an AT Oil Cooler is a great idea. I'm thinking of doing so meself. In fact I wonder why MBZ dinna have it on the E320. I know for a fact that the E36/E55 have got them..Maybe the big Es sans AMG are supposed to be driven by er..old fogeys or OAP (Old Age Pensioners)!!

Sourcing an E36/E55 ATOC would be like hen's teeth I guess, so I may just go the modded way, as you did.

What I don't get was you saying that yer worried about cross conta, mination betwixt water onto the ATF... AFAIK, the ATOC works by having a radiator/cooler with or without small cooling fans (My Audi A8 in CN has got those fans) and with return pipes to the transmission. It is an Aircooled (Air to Fluid) thingy with the cooler acting just like our radiator. The only fluids are the ATF and in no way can it be cross contaminated with water or other fluids. If yer worried about the pipes' strength, ATOC normally uses steel braided kevlar lined hoses with aircraft standard screw collars or you can source those SBL at good motorsport shops. Tons of'em in Sunway.... One famous name is Aeroquip.

Thanks again for a great belated introduction and the ATOC modification. Do keep us informed of the set-up, say after a week's usage....

the mighty renngrun has spoken

thanks for the assurance on the 722.6 *pheww
and i was actually waiting for your reply for quite some time *lol

the ATOC worry was pre-mod, not post-mod. the worry is the reason for the additional/separate radiator

the one i got is an "FV" made in korea, quite small, maybe 2/3 of an A4 paper and no, it doesn't come with a cooling fan. so far so good.... shifts seems to happen slighty later especially when cold... at approximately 2k rom instead of the regular 1k+ rpm

the hose I got is rubber, 10mm diametre... not sure if it is reinforced and steel braided hose was not an option. looks like regular home LPG rubber hose except 2 times thicker and each coonection is tied with 2 pins, which means 8 altogether and i will upload some pics soon

there were about 8 options on the ATOC, had to go with the one 1 installed due to limited space in the engine bay. we wanted the fins to be in front of the radiator and not elsewhere to allow better cooling, unfortunately - the radiator and kompressor fan below took up most of the space. and the kleeman kits were not much help either

here are some of the pics promised, the ATOC is rather small to minimise effect on radiator, it has 2 make shift brackets at the right bottom and top centre. the hose are 10mm industrial strength rubber, no steel braid.
one of the horns relocated to allow space for the ATOC

another option was bottom, this option was passed due to insufficient space between the Kompressor fan and the Kleeman front bumper which is a snug fit

Thanks for posting Jason...

I thought 'twas positioned at the bottom. Anyways, as long as it doesn't interfere with the airflow to the rad, it should be fine.

Please ensure that the ATF fluid is sufficient since you've driven it a couple of days already. The ATF would of been through all nooks and crannies by now and should fill the hoses/ rad ends too. Therefore it's prudent to have yer mechanic run another 'dip-stick'(you ain't got no dipstick, you 722.6 you..hah!) test to check cukup atau tidak itu ATF....

Great mod bud, I'm gunna stick mine just behind the lower grille valance, on the left side...... ( Gua punye kereta orang tua..banyak space kat depan tuh...)

Thanks for the pics..

Actually to be honest it's not that small. The one I installed in my car is much smaller..

Anyway, I suppose what matters is that it would not be visible when you close your bonnet..

...Quite a need installation brother !
