Just popping in Joined: 2010/4/2 From: Serdang Posts: 17 Benz Model: w124 200E Message:	Re: GPS and Navigation system GPS is the hardware unit...navigation system is the software ...eg like Garmin, Papago etc i prefer handheld unit as i can bring it around,save personal favourite spot and stuff..but must remember to keep it when you are done using it.. my 124 passenger screen was smashed and my Garmin was stolen. total damage RM90 for the screen and RM900 for my garmin built-in means it is permanently fix to your console, and have to pay professionals to install. might cost a bomb as authorised GPS unit dealers know how hope this info helps

It is the satelites that orbit around planet earth. It is also commonly use as a name for the GPS Receiver (Hardware). Just like in UK, they say "I text you a message" while here Malaysia, they say "I sms you a message". In fact SMS means Short Messaging Service, often used by network providers. Somehow, it's an error not many would bother with in this part of the world. Navigation is the software that directs you from point-to-point. It may be visual or voice assisted. It uses the data from the GPS received along with some data provided by mappers to provide you with a logical route to a specific destination. There's a very good Malaysian forum that gives alot of free info and maps. Try www.malfreemaps.com (Admin, please feel free to delete the link if not appropriate, thanks) Guess that about it. : )

Yes, the handheld unit like Garmin is handy as you can use it with any car. I bought that for my wife...now it save me all the trouble to show her the way to places whenever she has a meeting in town. I'm actually please with it. Yes, my boss also kena, his brand new car windscreen got smash ...they took his Garmin....the radio tak sempat due to alarm.. Have you tried it? I thought this should be automatic when you switch on the system...like what we have in our mobile phone...every week they request us to download the software again... Joe, what is e71? is that a Nokia Mobile Phone? My SE Xperia also have it but never use it...need to check whether got voice navigation..or not...hehehe.. Depending on what hardware you're gonna install it into. The maps provided by malfreemaps are updated every Monday of the week. You see, the GPS receiver in actual facts is just a blank white page. It is for companies like Garmin to sell you maps so that you can install it into your system. But for our case in Malaysia, we are very fortunate to have a community of GPS users who send in information on road,traffic flow etc, and this group of people on malfreemaps convert this data into a map readable to your GPS or computer. So basically, instead of purchasing the maps thru garmin or papago, you come to this website and download it for free. Just a note, All nokia phones come with ovi maps, but I find garmin more detail. So if you're using a nokia and would like to generate a free licence for garmin, you could PM me or look for the crack solution on the internet. Iphone uses papago, while Sonyericsson uses the "cannot-go" , ie, no use Unfortunately, most SE phone do not use symbian operating system, and most of the models do not support GPS. Only just a handfull. Darn... I'm late, I'll continue later. Sorry, was writing this halfway and had to leave. So, Iphone users can use papago with the latest maps for free from www.malfreemaps.com Guess that's about all. Happy GPSing

For Garmin, which is better downloading from the computer or directly to the GPS?...can you believe it I never done any updating since procurement.. beside the GPS is always with my wife or daughter as I don't need it to get my way in KL/Selangor. I agreed with you that most SE comes with sympbian platform. However starting from XPERIA 1 they have running on Window OS platform. With the latest XPERIA 10, it will be on android platform. According to SE, this will match or exceed iphone. Thinking of getting this one pretty soon to replace my current XPERIA X1 which personally I think is lovely.
