Some tips on finding a good mechanic and workshop
Salam and hello benzers,

Lately, we have seen a number of thread by our members relating their unpleasant experience on a specific workshop.

If you own a Mercs, this is a vital question. It matters who takes care of your car. It affects how safe your car is, how long your car will last, and how much money you will spend. And like finding and trusting a good doctor, it’s a relationship that could last and can perhaps save your life.

1. Ask around.

In order to help new benzer, this community has come up with a lists of recommended workshops based on member’s previous experience. Always have this in mind that one experience may differ from another person’s experience. Hence, the best assessment has to come from your own personal experience. There is no right or wrong….just like some of us here prefer brunet while some prefer blondes.

Having these lists should not deter any members from patronizing their favorite workshop. At the end of the day, it's a personal choice and preference. One have to use own discretion and judgment in selecting any of these workshop especially if members are not familiar with the workshops or owners of the workshop.

2. Interview them.

Walk in and see how you’re greeted. Call first, but do go in before your car is broken and ask some questions. Is it busy? Is it clean? Yes, clean. Good mechanics keep their bays clean, their tools ordered. An updated computer system is vital to properly take care of your car. As an example, my Perdana mechanics, do notify me when either of my car is due for an oil change or tune-up. It’s good for their business to be organized; it’s good for me to be reminded.

3. Be realistic.

You need a mechanic you can get to. Ideally, they should be close to your work or home. Performing regular maintenance lessens the chance of last-minute, high-cost surprises, so make scheduled appointments to take care of your vehicle. Which leads to my next point?

4. Develop a relationship.

Compare these scenarios. Your car is in the driveway, making a noise like marbles in a centrifuge. Who do you think is going to help you quickly and fairly? The mechanic who you’ve been having does regular oil changes and tune-ups, or some workshop that you walk into? Your mechanic is as human as you. You treat them well; they will take care of your car.

5. Check out the waiting room.

It should be clean and comfortable. It needn’t be posh, but there should be a stack of current magazines and today’s paper.

6. Take a peek into the bays.

I look for several things when I see who works at my favored garage. Familiar faces — high turnover can mean many things, but mostly it’s a sign of unsatisfied employees. I want happy people working on my car. Angry + wrench = not good. Uniforms — working on cars is dirty. A good employer provides clean uniforms.

7. Education.

This is a two-way street. Do some basic research on your car. You should have a file folder where you keep all the information on it. Read your owner’s manual, understand the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule and recognize that things like brakes and tires and belts don’t last forever. On the flipside, a good mechanic will explain precisely what your vehicle requires before proceeding. In my life, I have deals with many mechanics, non has came close as Doctor Gan. You can see for yourself how passionate he is with cars and how happy his customers are after visiting his workshop. Most importantly, he’s not stingy with his knowledge and I learn a lot about Mercedes by reading his posts. This should be your benchmark of a good mechanic.

I would like to share with you two good threads based on members contributions that will increase basic understanding what to expect when something wrong with your car. I don’t start these two threads for nothing.

8. Be fair.

Nobody likes to be the bearer of bad news. While an ongoing relationship will produce the best results, as your vehicle ages it will need more costly repairs at various times. While it’s your right to ask questions and consider different alternatives, pay for the services provided, including quotes, regardless of how you proceed.

Remember, the best mechanic has to be ourselves and it better be our responsibility..

Re: Some tips on finding a good mechanic and workshop
salam,
