DIESEL !! - Euro 2M
Euro 2M diesel is now here in Malaysia ahead of the 1st September 2009 schedule. It is priced at RM1.70 per liter. You will be able to find it at all Petronas stations from the 1st onwards in the form of the new Petronas Dynamic Diesel, thatís sold with an additive Petronas calls SINAR D07. Petronas says the previous additive introduced in 2006 was known as SINAR D05.

The new Petronas Dynamic Diesel meets Euro 2M standards, which means a maximum of 500ppm of sulphur in the fuel. This is a huge improvement over the previous standard which limited sulphur content to 3000ppm. But donít think all diesels were that high in sulphur all this while Ė a research by Petronas which I pointed to back in 2007 showed that out of 6 brands of diesel at that time (2004), only one had 2800 ppm of sulphur, with the rest ranging from as low as 200 ppm to 500 ppm.

The availability of Euro 2M diesel fuel may spark an interest in both the car manufacturers and consumers to offer diesel versions of passenger cars and buy these diesel-powered products respectively. However one problem would be the fact that most modern diesel engines are designed to run on Euro 3 (350ppm), so the new Euro 2 diesel may still not be good enough. Euro 4 requires 50ppm, and Singaporean diesel such as Shell ULSD is already compliant.

Companies that are confident of a big enough volume might be willing to do some modifications to suit our market and it is very likely that this will only happen at the more expensive segments where the margins are larger and easier to justify. For cheaper cars, consumers may not be confident enough in diesel cars and most may still shy away from the benefits of a turbodiesel because of the certain negative characteristics of a diesel engine such as the sound and smell.

The worst part is that even for those who are very eager to try diesel cars for the economy it offers, the norm is for diesel powerplants to cost more than a petrol engine, so this may drive up the prices of diesel-engined models to a level too shocking for the budget-conscious consumers at that level to accept.

In the second hand car market, the new diesel may spark a new interest in second hand diesel-powered luxury cars cars such as the Mercedes-Benz E270 CDi or the BMW 530d as a powerful and fuel efficient alternative. The E270 CDI can be found priced at a good 15% to 20% cheaper than its petrol-powered siblings of the same year and the massive low-end torque of a turbodiesel suits the kind of relaxed drive that an E-Class buyer typically looks for.

We will see more fuel companies launching their improved Euro 2 diesels over the next few days leading up to the 1st September 2009 deadline for the new standard to be introduced. The fuel companies will definitely take this opportunity to rebrand their fuels

I wonder which oil companies have been selling diesels as low as 200-500ppm all these while....

Great improvement though EU countries are aiming for Euro 5 (10ppm) by next year.

Cheers!!

Salam bro, orang baru ni nak mencelah kalau boleh.

Off topic - kat square tu la kita kena kilatkan piala 24 tahun dulu.

Back to the topic of diesels - anyone in the forum currently driving a merc diesel? Or if anyone can point to a sub-forum that discusses diesels, much appreciated.

Hi ismaia,

Am using a 03' 270cdi which has since clocked 150k km. Maybe I've been lucky not to have to experience any of those horror stories about the cdi engines. The only cdi related component replaced has been the turbo unit which was done under warranty.

As you already know, the cdi is much more simpler then its petrol counterpart with so much less parts and sensors that can go wrong. From experience, maintenance is much lower then petrol versions.

If you have read from my earlier postings, I've never from day one believed that diesel quality is the culprit causing problems but rather inexperienced mechanics who try to make a killing. As clearly stated in the manual, any diesel fuel that does not meet the design requirement, shorten the oil change interval. Fully synthetic engine oils must also meet the minimum MB specs. Have been using Mobil 1 Delvac with oil change interval at 10k km or 6 months. So far so good.

Even the local Toyota D4D diesels had some issues that were related to engine oil, so needless to say, you cant simply plonk in a can of engine oil designed for petrol engines and expect it to perform its duties in a diesel environment which is many times harsher.

Btw, except for the exhaust smell, I cannot find any noticeable difference in the Euro2 fuel. Same perception when I tried the low sulphur fuel in Thailand and Spore. So I suspect that its more for preserving the environment rather then the engine. Anyway its the cetane level that gives the combustion power.

Another point is that the cdi cars that has been brought in are not fitted with the dpf - so one less item to worry about although it will belch out huge volumes of smoke under full throttle.

So no worries, just enjoy the cdi!

Re: DIESEL !! - Euro 2M
As bro wys pointed out, I to is in the belief that any effects of non compliant fuel has will be in the after burning part of the engine, i.e. in the emission. So my initial thought when reading about this subject, like a Cat Conv in a petrol setup, the DPF is the one that can go wrong along the line as it collects impurities.

In theory, a regeneration process will burn these filtered impurities to nothing. A sensor in the DPF measures levels of impurities and after the level has been breached, the EMS will instruct the engine (under normal run) to behave abnormally (be driven in higher than usual revs) to increase DPF temperature and burn the soots out.

Other than the automated regeneration process, diesel owners sometime do this manually by trashing the car driving hard. And in the workshop, the process can be manually started using STAR diag.

My cousin had his DPF replaced after about 2 years on Malaysian diesel. But his is the more 'cerewet' highly tuned brabus engine. So I think mine should do fine.

So Malaysian cdi has the DPF taken out? Anyone knows if this can be done locally, and if so any contacts?

Bro wys, which workshop do you go to? And is the Mobil oil easily found?

I've used the cdi for 4 years. Before that I was driving a company petrol car a 2.0 passat for about 6 months. I've been keeping tabs on consumption and mpg, and I can see a resembling difference between petrol and diesel consumptions.

No matter how much I trash the cdi engine, it can still maintain a high average mpg. When it was the petrol, trashing and driving like mad will result in lower mpg. This is confirmed when I spoke to other diesel owners here.

Hm.. take out the DPF eh?
