W124 E220 Japan model engine misfirng and stalling Hi
Hope someone here can help the problem I am having My W124 started having low idling problem 1 month back. This caused the engine to stall. Restarting it , sometimes a few times , revving the engine may get it going for a while. Sometimes it just died in the midst of driving which can be dangerous 2 weeks back the engine started to misfire randomly. Sometimes it would ok for a few days and then problem starts again Now I have a foreman checked it and he says the throttle body is malfunctioning causing the idling to drop. He also said the mass air flow sensor is giving the misfiring problem. Hope someone here can enlighten me on these problems. Thanks

Re: W124 E220 Japan model engine misfirng and stalling He could be right, however this could also be an airleak after the airflow meter, any air dragged in here isn't 'seen' by the ECU and so not compensated for and leans the engine out causing rough running. As its a mechanical fault it tends not to turn on the fault light.
Check the hose clips for tightness and inspect the trunking for any cracks or splits and also all the vacuum system, the small bore pipes and fittings for cracks and missing parts. The best way to locate a leak is to have the engine running and warm and then spray lighter gas around each joint in turn. If the engine rev's up you've found your leak. It’s also worth getting the fuel pressure checked as if this is low due to a blocked filter or faulty regulator or even a poorly pump will all result in insufficient fuel being delivered to the engine Might also be worth cleaning out the idle speed control motor / valve as these get clogged up with carbon and some brake cleaner washed through helps free things off. Might also be worth checking the wiring and connector to the airflow meter for any signs of corrosion or damage. you can do a quick fault find if you unplug the meter and run the engine without it. If you just spray brake cleaner into the throttle you may shift any debris but its usually better to try and remove the item from the engine and ensure all passageways are clean Keep us posted ![]()

Re: W124 E220 Japan model engine misfirng and stalling Thanks Mabel for your tips and advice
Apparently my foreman has tried and checked all related areas for problems like ignition coil, onboard computer, spark plugs, cables and petrol filter. Now another mechanic has plug in a diagnostic machine and cfm that the throttle body and mass airflow sensor shows fault. I am now trying to source reburbished throttle body which is very rare nowadays. I found and ordered a new mass airflow sensor from AliExpress Any one got any source of these parts in Ipoh area? Thanks in advance Rgds
