Help Needed for Leaks on W123
Hi Guys ,

Newbie here to forums and Benz Ownership. Learnt a lot from you guys before I purchased my baby , I call her Hilda .

I'm into the 5th month of ownership now my W123 C200 1980 and I'm the 3rd owner . Not sure how many KMs she has done as the odo just says 140 k KM and does not move anymore . Spent RM 5.5k on purchasing it and these are the things I had done so far

1) Change Disc Pads
2) AC gas
3) Brake hose
4) Changed clutch top pump
5) Distribution Cap and Cable
6) AC Compressor and Blower Motor Replaced- This might have been unnecessary as later found out it was the wiring that was the problem , lesson learnt to sent to a A.C Specialist next time .
7) Change 4 tires .
8) Changed clutch plate and bearings

have spent 4k on the above and the car runs well now , have had pleasant drives to Janda Baik and Slim River . There is still a nagging problem of leaks . The engine oil leaks but for the life of me I cant tell where its from . My mechanic said its from the top of the valve cover and the gasket needs to be replaced but says that I can live with it . The funny thing is the engine oil level still is always pretty full . He says its normal for a car this age . I'm not satisfied with the answer . I hope I can have my car looked at by someone and provide me some pointers on what I should do next to restore my car mechanically . Another leak i have is the power steering fluid . I had the hose replaced and the leak is much reduced but its still there . My Mechanic said its the pump and short of replacing it , nothing much that can be done .

Apologies cant seem to post any pics now , keep getting an error message when I use the image manager ....

Route66driver,

Try washing the engine first...a clean engine makes tracing a leak much easier...

Cheers,
Mike

Agreed, wash the engine bay including the undercarriage of the engine, then you can look for source of the leak. If the oil is red in colour, probably your power steering hose or atf is leaking, but check the colour of your power steering fluid and atf in the reservoir. If it's not the the two fluid, it's the engine oil.

Thanks Mike . I have washed the engine and can confirm that both engine oil and power steering pump is leaking . Have changed the power steering hose which minimized the power steering leak but the actual pump itself has a smaller leak . Currently am just topping up with ATF Fluid ( the pump uses Dextran 3) weekly and it works fine . I believe the engine oil is from the engine cover , also very slow leak , Asked mech again he said not a real problem , can change the gasket during next service . Any idea on the cost of repacing the gasket ?

Sorry, but I can't comment on how much it would cost, although I don't think it'd be that expensive.

Your mechanic's not wrong, but it'd depend on when your next service is. If it's a long time away, do take into account the cost of topping up engine oil and of course, your engine bay becoming dirty again.

Cheers,
Mike

Thanks Mike , yeah he mentioned the same thing . Good thing is the leak drops down to the floor so only my porch tiles are dirty . So far the dipatick level has only dropped by 5% and the oil pressure gauge is always at the max . Gonna just monitor the situation now .

By the way do you have any recommendations for rust repair ? I suspect rain water is seeping through the hardened rubber linings and there is a small rust spot on the floorboard . i know rust s the number one enemy for these old mercs . What is the best way to treat it ?

Thanks again for the kind advice ,
Joshua

For the rust, if it is only the surface, you could clean the surface rust using wire brush, or rust treament, which chemically turns rust intometal back.

However, if the rust has gone through the metal sheet, either you have to replace the panel, or the rust has to be cut out, and weld fresh steel sheet back. The replacement part is not expensive on w123, but labour charge probably is. Any reputable body panel shop to share, datuk- datuk and tan sri?

Hi all ,

Thanks for your help. Glad to report that have had the problem sorted by replacing the high pressure and low pressure hoses from the power steering pump and the bottom clutch pump. Was done at a merc specialist in Kayu Ara. MB garage . Chap called Chnadran. Including service was RM 850 for all. Still have small engine oil leak due to leaking oil seal at tranny area but he said it's fine. Much better and my porch is not looking like my car excreted and bleed on it anymore.

Great !

Small stains or an occasional drop of fluid under your vehicle may not mean much. But wet spots deserve attention; check puddles immediately. You can identify fluids by their color and consistency:

Yellowish green, pastel blue or florescent orange colors indicate an overheated engine or an antifreeze leak caused by a bad hose, water pump or leaking radiator.
A dark brown or black oily fluid means the engine is leaking oil. A bad seal or gasket could cause the leak.
A red oily spot indicates a transmission or power-steering fluid leak.
A puddle of clear water usually is no problem. It may be normal condensation from your vehicle's air conditioner.
