Identifying a Masterpiece (with pictures)
Hi Mybenz,

As some of you know, I have recently bought a W124 E220 Masterpiece. Would like to thank all of the welcomes and tips on where to get my stuff.

Anyway, I've gone through many threads that discuss what is a real Masterpiece, and there are indeed many informative things in there. What I do find lacking are pictures. So..... I'd thought of posting some pictures of my new Merc, to help others identify what is a Masterpiece.

Before I post the pictures, here are some of the best references for W124 Masterpiece.

Identifying features of a Masterpiece (taken from the post mentioned above and added my own comments):

Exclusive to Masterpiece only
1. Gear knob - written 'Masterpiece'.
2. Steering, half leather, half wooden.
3. Electric chairs for both front seats, controls just beside the door release.
4. Two SRS air bags, one for driver and passenger each.
5. Metal plate with engraved 'Mercedes-Benz' attached to the door step.
6. Leather seats and door panels are all leather
7. Rear windscreen has automatic blinds pre-installed.
8. Has the word 'Masterpiece' written on the right hand side of the boot.
9. Has cruise control.
10.Rear windows has blinds pre-installed.

Other collaborating features (not exclusive to Masterpiece, but all Masterpiece will have these features)
1. Registration year should be 1995 only (and perhaps 1996).
2. White engine (engine code M111).
3. Chasis number with WDB 124xxx 6C xxxxxx.
4. Signal lights are clear & transparent, not yellow.

Pictures below.

1. Gear knob - written 'Masterpiece'.

2. Steering, half leather, half wooden.

3. Electric chairs for both front seats, controls just beside the door release.

4. Two SRS air bags, one for driver and passenger each. (refer to picture 2 for driver's side airbag)

(no pics on this as mine was not available / removed before I bought them)

Do let me know if I miss out anything.

:) Hopefully this would be useful to potential buyers.

Before I bought mine, I was actually searching for pictures of MP online, but most of the time, it is only the Gear Knob and Exterior. Hence decided to make this post. :)

Actually, no. The only items exclusive to the Masterpiece are items no. 1 and 8. The rest were available as options for W124s assembled/manufactured before the introduction of the Masterpiece. Fully-optioned cars will have all of the remaining items. My 1994 car (imported, UK-spec) has cruise control, leather, two airbags and electric seats.

Bear in mind that the Masterpiece was a locally-assembled W124 and that all the extras were installed as an incentive to clear the remaining stocks prior to the introduction of the W210, so all Masterpieces would have been manufactured in the final months of W124 production, i.e. 1995. Any W124 manufactured and registered before 1995 would not be a Masterpiece.

In addition, there's a E280 version of the Masterpiece. This engine would be the M104.

The lights (signal and rear), and corresponding changes to the body panels, was introduced in the 1992/93 facelift, so all facelifted W124s will have these lights/body panels.

Cheers...

Yup, you're right. It's just not many buyers opt for the extras at that time, hence most of these items are only seen in Masterpiece. But you're absolutely right man.

As for E280, I'm under the impression that all MP would have M111 engines. At least that has been the story that I've read about up till now....

bro, it is still a car which needs to be maintained, definitely there will be parts to be changed considering its age.

but look at it this way, a few hundred in 2- 3 months is still better than paying close to 1k in installments every month for 7 years.

plus, you do not need to suffer much depreciation. at circa 28k, the most it could depreciate is 28k, unlike new cars, half the value would be wiped out in 5 years.
