ECU mumbo jumbo
I was doing some work on a C220 CDI ECU last week, so I thought I'ld share it with you guys since it is already open.

The connectors for the wire harness.

What you would see when you pop open one of this ECUs. That's the reverse side . OR the backside

The heart of the ECU. The processor, the FLASH, some drivers, Mosfets, Relays, diodes and lots of resistors and capacitors.

Just a simple summary on how the ECU works on most cars, it takes the fuel reading, air reading, engine temp and some other stuff from sensors hooked all over the car and feed this datas to the ECU, and in turn calculate the best amount of fuel to feed to the injectors, how much air is allowed to pass. When the combustion takes place and is passed out thru the manifold, there are other sensors that pick up how much unburnt fuel has passed thru and in turn this datas are fed back to the ECU to be reprocessed. Then when the fumes are passed thru the catalatic converters, there is another sensor that picks up if the air that comes out from the CC's are good enough for the environment. Again, this datas are being fed back to the ECU.

I'm not good with the car terms as I am no mechanic, but basically from an electronics point of view, the datas are being taken from sensors, the ECU calculates the optimum and makes the engine run on what is best.

Then the same goes for security, which is seriously very poor in any car. Whatever datas that are being sent from the ECU to the key can be sniffed and emulated. But that is another case.

Just removed the FLASH to reprogram the firmware from a compatible ECU.

AMD FLASH close up. This is all very old technology. It's been around for more than 20 years now. My suspect why they do not move to smaller packages is because of the solder surface. In an automobile where there are lots of vibration and shock, using a smaller soldering surface would give it a higher risk of bad solder joints. BUT then again, that's my guess. I may be wrong here.

Resoldering the Flash back to the ECU

The eeprom. It contains some data on the immobiliser and some other non important datas.

Have a nice weekend.

Hi Ngaiseng,

If happend that we meet-up one day, we can talk a lot of the electronic board inside.

I am in semiconductor field since 1993. All those staffs you mentioned were my products line-up or competitor product.

Every IC has its nature. AMD is NOR Flash memory which is similar camp with Intel NOR flash and is only good for system firware programming. NOR flash memory is very much different than Samsung/Toshiba/ST (for image/song storage) which we call it NAND flash memory.

Most of the active components (IC),passive components (capacitor & resistor) and descrete components (diode)on the PCB are surface mounting. Only high load cap that standing taller cannot be available in SMD type.

I had no chance to look at the cosmetic package of the IC. For envinronment demand, military device use ceramic package (ceramic encapsulation) and consumer product using plastic encapsulation. For car environment, plastic type is good enough too as the withdtanding op temp is surpassing 80C.

For myself, I am now majorly in the supply of LCD (monochrome or colour/TFT LCD) and touch panel to factory for many kind of application. Automotive is one of my market segment as well which I am servicing to people like Clarion/AV, Blaupunkt/AV & Continental/meter cluster.

if you have some questions for LCD, I will try to give some advice.

This website is good as everyoen of us is trying to help each other and leverage on each other expertise.

Thanks to all the myBenz member. Cheers !

Hi Raymond.

Thanks for the offer. I'll certainly take a rain check on it.

I have worked on mainly BGA Combo and BGA packages up to 0.25mil. PLCC, SOIC and TSOP were something I used to do in the early to mid ninties.

I've written some custom programs with PICs and have worked with Motorola MC68HC E9 and E11 including Atmel 89C2051 processors.

I'm currently working towards ECU repairs and am working on some Proton,Nissan and Honda ECUs. I have a few Merc ECUs that has security problems and this happen to be one of them.

Would be cool if we chance to meet up and I'm sure we have alot to chat about.

Hi Ngaiseng,

Sounds like you were with CARSEM since you are from Ipoh and familiar with those package type.

PIC was one of my main product line as I worked for the regional distributor for Microchip Technology.

I thought why you desoldered the AMD 28H flash but looks like you are engineering it for some purpose.

Repairing the EUC ? Oh yes, please continue your study. It helps everyone pocket money. Cheers !

Rgds,
Raymond Goh

Salam Penghulu Kelantan,

I'm not attached with Carsem, Raymand. They manufacturer semicons while I tear them apart. For me electronics is something I enjoy and studied, so I'm just putting it to some use.

Darn thunderstorm blew up my wireless router and left me an internet widow for over a day.

HI NgaiSeng, All

I too play with a lot of electronic as a profession.

occasionally i also do ECU (cars and superbike) repairs but mostly for friend. not doing it for a living, no time for that.

Frankly, the most problematic ECU i found is from Hond@. i repair quite a lot of those. i found Toyot@ one is more reliable as they built in more protection clamping circuitry inside.

For Example: a valve or solenoid or pump that draws more current will actually damaged the Fets or relay inside the ECU.

I had one funny encounter too, its Jeep Cherokee ECU. it opens up like a book with all FLEX circuitry. its almost... unrepairable coz the trace is so fragile that will make the whole circuitry delaminated.

Some C200 W202 ECu is also very hard to repair. the unit is sealed with epoxy and quite hard to get them apart as both section has many wire joins (spring type) connecting them together.

that's some to share with you.
