W210 Masuk Hospital
My W210 E280 this morning suddenly died on me in the middle of the road..

While moving, it was ok with temperature of 90+ but suddenly dies and sees white smoke come out from the engine.

Then when i let the car slowly flow to the side of the road and off the key switch and put to the start position, can see the temperatue suddenly shoot up to 120C.

I opened the hood and all the white smoke came out from the middle part of the engine. Can smell something burning.

Best part is in the morning before i move i added water in my tank.

No choice i called tow truck and towed to my panel workshop. After a while he opened the water cap and found out the water is still 3/4 full.

I just left the car at work shop for them to find out what happened.

What a day to start my monday. but lucky also cos it happened today cos tmrw i actually intend to go Ipoh for Family trip... if kena outstation.. habis la especially Public Holiday.

sorry to hear of the mishap.

ni masuk hospital due to very high fever la ni...

just to share,

this syndrome always happen when the overflow tank is empty
n we top up with water without knowing u have to bleed
the cooling system of any air pocket in it.

so masa jalan, the temp gauge, usually situated at the
thermostat/some radiator, will show the temp at that
place only without knowing the water temp in the engine
is much more higher coz the water flow are somehow rather,
being partially blocked by the trapped air.

so bila steam sudah keluar, the trapped air pon ikut sama
keluar la, and the system are free from the trapped air
and instead the water has turn to steam.

thats why u suddenly see the drastic change of coolant temp
to 120 c. but its too late lah, so kena park tepi jalan le.

learnt this with my peugeout n citroen. tapi they have
bleeders on top of the thermostat,.

for merc, what they usually do is fill the tank with water
n disconnect the water hose at the thermostat.press the top
spring in the thermostat with screwdriver n wait untill
theres water flowing out while still filling the tank.
then reconnect the hose n fill ur tank untill its 3/4 full.

then u can drive off.

For W210 water temp we should maintain only 80++ when on Stationary/Jammed condition. Normally when you always add water to your radiator this shows that your thermostat is not good working condition.Then you need to change it asap.If you did not change the water will not circulate, when this happened, the water in the engine jacket will starts to be heated ad become steam and will find a weak point/place to go off such as gasket or hoses which ever comes first. To check whether your thermostat is in working condition; hold your water hoses top and bottom to compare the heat.Initial starting the engine the top hose you can feel the heat and the bottom hose is still cold.Before the cooling fan cut in the bottom hose you can feel the heat then when the temp keep rising then the cooling fan will cut in. Please try and experience it. The most important in engine system is water cooling system and really needs good care of it.

good tip...i think whtever model of MB u drive we need to ensure water cooling system is alrite to avoid sudden overheat..if not fenning kepala...mmg kete akan msk hospital..and more RM need to be spent..so kena hati2 always

Here is a good advice from Dr Gan

Standard Operation temperature
for M/Benz Engine is 90'c - 110'c

When The Engine Coolant Temperature
reach the Maximum 110'c

The Cooling Fan (addition air con fan @ auxiliary fan)
The Suction Fan (control unit operated)
Should Cut-in with Fully Operation (High Speed)
to cooling down the system to prevent the engine from overheating

120'c is a maximum temperature (OVERHEATED)
The engine Should STOP ... For Cooling Down
(You May realize THE AIR CON SYSTEM is WARM)

130'c is too late ... ENGINE IS ALREADY OVERHEATED !!!

Please do NOT remove the radiator cap (HIGH Pressurised)
or
Top up water When The Engine Is Still WARM
(may cause the unneccessary damaged to the engine)

We Need to be cool (do not panic)
Cool Down the Engine Completely
or Top Up The Cooling System
with Boilled @ warm Water Only (my personal Advice)
for match the system temperature ....

Thank you all member for the tips and concern. I will visit the workshop and see what happen. In general the mechanic will not follow what i say cos this i a company car but atleast give him some suggestions what to talk to my bos ler so that he get all the quotations approved... hehe

Also i have been complaining about black oil leaking and he saw that the few gasket is having oil stain.. that have to be fix too..

Hi all,

I went to the workshop this noon. Finally management approved the quotation and they able to start work today.

When they dismantle the top engine they found a pool of black oil bertakung inside which leaked for quite sometime. This caused smoke coming out from the engine when hot...

Mechanic say now they are doing top engine overhaul and should be taking 4 working days to complete it. Replacing all the gasket as well..
